  Hi guys!

  I did a Bing search on 1844 & Oregon & Wiss*,  and it turned up some genealogy records for people entering the Oregon territory in 1844, including several people named "Wiss".
  Short of that -wiss- is an abbreviation of wissenshaft which means roughly 'scientific knowledge' which is pretty far a field for a cryptic tombstone inscription.
