All (and Layne, would you please relay to Skip Belanger?)

I ordered this book for my cousin (age 95) as she is a great historian and reader. Her mother was a genealogist, and provided me with much information in researching our families. Even though they came across the trail in 1853, I thought the experience might be similar.

So, for those of you who haven't gotten the book yet, and those of you who have... I thought you would enjoy her comments.

"I'm already at Laramie on the way to Oregon -- thank you for the great selection of records of 1851 on the trail. This is really a fine thing to assemble -- so many details of the trip, in a pattern I haven't exactly seen (limited reader, eh?) before. Maybe others are choked with footnotes? Or ever-edited? Or I'm recalling badly. Anyway, I like this, and thank you every time I read more pages.

"Don't we wish sometimes that our families had been more literate? I've never heard any mention of one keeping a journal or writing "recollections" and the few surviving letters are only of the essentials...those Govers & Palmers were just *so* practical."

Now, Skip, you need to know the above came from a "frequent" contributor of articles to the Oregonian and other publications, back in the day. So, high praise, I'd say.

Dear OR-Rooters;

I received a message from long time list member Albert (Skip) Belanger
about his recently published book. I know we have had a number of
lively exchanges begun in part by Albert's postings as he worked on this
manuscript. I wanted the rest of the list to know about it's
availability.

At long last……my manuscript is in print! I’ve called the book, On
the Oregon Trail in 1851 - Canaries, Buffalo-Chips, and Elephants. The
title recalls the delightful distractions, the distasteful drudgery, and
the dangerous disasters experienced by those brave souls who made that
2,000 mile trek across the continent. Although I’ve had to cut the
size almost in half to suit the publisher, it’s still 456 pages long
and includes a twenty-eight page, double column, comprehensive Index, an
extensive bibliography, as well as a list of the 122 original Trail
documents I’ve collected related to 1851, including their
repositories. (I’m preparing an unabridged edition on a CD for those
interested.)
. . . .
