Marsha;
I was a little confused by your question, but finally figured it out, my bad for taking typing short cuts. I had to search my email to find what you were referring to. The "Gordon" I was asking about was a middle name, which I included to partially "reduce" confusion since we have several Nicholas given names in the family all referred to as Nick or mostly Uncle Nick.
I should have written that paragraph;

 I figure this picture shows eight grand children for Uncle Nick of whom I have a record for five or six,  I speculate that the dapper young man sitting on far right is Austin Dean MELVIN b abt 1911,  there should be two girls Dorothy MELVIN b abt 1918, Janelle MELVIN b abt 1921 her brother drowned in Tahkenitch lake in 1932 so it is possible this could be on the occasion of his death I suppose, but I suspect he is the one being held on the porch rail and maybe his sister just to the left of him (his right) if it is him judging his age as twoish would make this photo 1929ish since he was b abt 1927 that leave Harry MELVIN b abt 1919 and Nick Gordon MELVIN b. July 1919 as the two youngest boys.
I do have a couple of Gordons in my family file, unfortuntately I know almost nothing about them; My 2nd great Uncle/4th cousin 5 times removed Ancel Melvin married an Elizabeth ?According to cousin Phoebe she was b Germany in 1823, but in the 1860 Census she lists PA as place of birth. Seems a little early to be claiming to be Pennsylvania Dutch? She married Ancel  24 April 1854 in Mercer Co., Illinois.
Just did a little research and she is living in the same house as Ancel and his second wife Sarah Foster in the 1850 Census with her two year old child Thomas. It looks like Thomas shows up in Rantoul town, Franklin, Kansas in the 1900 Census married to a Mary A. somebody so your Mary probably isn't in my line.
In the 1870 Oregon Census is this family in Deer Creek (Roseburg)HouseholdGenderAgeNicholas GordonM53yChristena GordonF40y Mary GordonF16yWilliam GordonM14yIsaac GordonM13yHugh GordonM10yNicholas GordonM9yJoshua GordonM6yAnn GordonF3yAlice GordonF10m

This is the only clue I could find on LDS index. I guress you have seen this;
