So true Sue, if it had just occurred to me to inquire at some point about his family I might have gotten a clue to all of this and tried to get him to reconnect. We have our differences in my family (almost inevitable when you have a large number of people who consider each other "close" family) and I like best what one of the cousins mentioned when we were discussing one of the family feuds; our clan on both my mother and my father's side have always had a pretty good track record of, as he put it "checking their weapons at the door" at any family doings. You might catch the odd catty remark or see the occasional white knuckle as two feuding people "put on a happy face" in greeting, but most of the time on the surface at least every one gets along.
I might have been able to convince Tom to do a little of that if I had known the true story.

It is sad when we realize that we don't know as much about our
friends and acquaintances as we thought we did. We think/hope that
we have an open trusting relationship but that's not always the
case. Too bad that he couldn't have shared his emotions with you
and possibly the pain of it all would have been less.
