[or-roots] Volunteer Indexing on 1940 census - picking an area?

David I hope you didn't get the first three where I didn't quite get the hang of the entering for same etc. I figured it out on the fourth page which was my fault as I should have checked arbitration before then and  I would have known. My beef is when I find a name that is either or and I want to get it right and go find out from earlier census info what it actually is eg one I did first day; Loma or Lorna take your pick you can't convince me there is any more reason to call her Loma than there is Lorna on evidence from the page, so i went and found out for sure, found he marriage record in California where she married what his name, her maiden name was Lorna Elliott, but the arbitrator said I read it wrong. So now what? I think I am still going to take the extra effort, but it is frustrating as I had three of those judgement calls reversed in arbitration and i know I am right.
Hopefull from now on will keep my error rate below five percent.
Les

there isn't any back door at all. Never has. Pick the state. Remember we
are helping each other!!!

To be sure of strange spellings, please google GNIS and check
Wikipedia.org. Accurate spellings of place names are mandatory.

Watch out for "Same Place" and "Same House"  - they are not same thing.

Instructions are there on right side at bottom for each entry space. If
not sure, never hurt to ask on this list and I will be on lookout for them.

It seems to me like it would make sense for us to do our own area, for example I would know what a lot of the names really are even in a marginally legible local census page. Of course if I index a name with the correct spelling and the arbitrator decides I have read it wrong that won't help, but still. I have spent so much time fishing in so many parts of Oregon though it seems like I almost always know what I am reading. I had two on the last page tonight that were a complete mystery to me. Homer Amorvin or something like thay and Worlein or maybe Moveim or ??.  I did three or four pages of K falls so far one in Hood river and one each Portland and Dixonville and 2? Roseburg.

It asks a bunch of automated questions and then you wait for a human being. took about 15 minutes for her to show up, but I have two monitors so had than on left screen and went on working in right screen.
