The person in this book who came from Maine to Oregon is Herbert Orville
Howard. He was born in Maine of a logging family in 1853. His parents
were Maryann Corliss and Joel Hamilton Howard. He married Abbie Emerson
(his second wife). Emerson is the family I am interested in. He went to
Oregon while she was pregnant, then she followed. Their first child,
Calvin Fay Howard, was born in Rainier on Aug 14, 1877. They also had a
daughter Lizzie.
Herb had a younger sister, Laura, who married Charles Henry Briggs in
Maine. They also came to Oregon. Charles Briggs and Herb Howard bought
80 acres on Milton creek in 1879. They soon bought more tracts. Herb
Howard saves money and began his own logging. He began working on Milton
creek early in the 1889s, one of several small logging operators along
the creek. There are account books that Herb kept naming people who
worked for him.
In 1891, there was a sawmill on Dart Creek listed as Howard-Corliss
Lumber Company, but it soon became Herb's mill. Herb's home farm was the
land on Dart Creek where he established his sawmill. At the time of the
writing of this book, 1983, Herb's son, Ira Howard, with his wife, still
lives in the spacious house built 70 years ago.
There's a lot of information about him. He had 5 wives. If you think
this is your family, I would be glad to scan the appropriate pages and
send them to you off the list.
