Funny how now knowing what those indexes contain, and that they exist, it appears that both Douglas and Coos still have their copies of these records in their storage.

Sorry Les, we may never get finished it's true, but each new treasure is a gold mine.

To go along with Les' recent discovery of his Rondeau kin in the Plaindealer, I found this mention re: Jeremiah Huntley (1810-1862):

...Exempting from all of the foregoing
 described premises in said first, second and third mortgages are the
following tracts and parcels:
Commencing at a point 30 chains north
of the southeast corner of the John Lehnherr donation claim, same being
No. 52 township 27 south of range 6 west of Willamette Meridian, Douglas
 county, Oregon; thence south 89 degrees 30 minutes west 10.15. chains;
thence north 2 degrees 35 minutes west 20.23 chains; thence north 5.83
chains,thence north 89 degrees 30 minutes east 10.98 chains to a point
on the east line of said Lehnherr donation claim 26.06 chains north of
the point of beginning; then south 26.06
 chains to the place of commencement, containing 27.66 acres. Commencing at a point north 70 degrees 30 minutes west 1.35 chains from the stone monument being the northwest corner of the J. Huntley donation claim No. 56 township 27 south of range 6 of Willamette meridian; thence along the
center of the county road north 70 degrees 30 minutes west 6.47 chains;
thence north 15.05 chains; thence south 70 degrees 30 minutes east 6.65
chains; thence south 14.90 chains to the place of beginning, containing
10 acres of land more or less in Douglas county, Oregon. Beginning at a
point on the west line of the right of way of the Oregon and California
railroad in section 12 township 27 should of range 6 west 18.54 chains
easy and 14.91 north of the northwest corner of the J. Huntley donation
claim No. 56 being also the northeast corner of land John Jones conveyed to M. Rohrer; thence west on north line of Rohrer and Orcutt's tracts 12.67 chains to the northwest corner of the land John Jones
conveyed to Orcutt, the deed for which is recorded in Vol, 23, page 76;
then north to on east line of land conveyed by John Jones to Mrs. Wells
the deed for which is recorded in Vol. 23 page 136, 31.97 chains; thence east 12.59 chains to railroad right of way; thence along west side of
said right of way; thence along west side of said right of way south
3.97 chains to the place of beginning, situate in Douglas County, Oregon and containing 5 acres.

The Plaindealer (Roseburg, OR) Dec 3, 1903  pg. 3

I then went and found the BLM GLO maps and DLC 56 and found that what is now the immediate right side of
the freeway is the Roseburg Masonic Cemetery/Memorial gardens was a part of his original DLC and is very close to the NW corner of it. On the 1967
Metzger map it shows both the DLC boundary and a section right near that NW corner identified as a "Cemetery". Per Historic Cemeteries in Oregon (Kuri Gill) the
Old Roseburg Masonic Cemetery annotation says "Refer to 1897 deed" and Old
Masonic Cemetery. It was also called Roseburg Pioneer Cemetery. Since often
cemeteries which were originally family cemeteries were later turned
over to fraternal organizations, my suspicion is that this plot was a family cemetery until it was deeded to the Masons. According to Jeremiah's Will, this
section of land would have been the piece given to his son, Milton, who was estranged from his wife about then and living in Curry county.

Thoughts on where to go next on this one anyone?

Robyn,

Below is a link to the census records in the Oregon State Archives.  As you can see if you scroll down to 1895 there are only a few counties where these 1895 census survived.

http://sos.oregon.gov/archives/Pages/records/aids-census_osa.aspx

There were also similar censuses done in 1865, 1875, 1885, and 1905 as indicated in the article.

The Oregon Historical County Records Guide would also have listings under the various Counties if there were any of these censuses in other repositories or still in the possession of the county.

The State Archives or the Oregon Historical Society may have them yet.

Ran across this article in the The Plaindealer (Roseburg, OR), Feb 18, 1895 pg. 3 - Does anyone know if copies of this census still exist, and where they can be found?

Assessment Census for '95
Tax payers should begin taking an inventory and account of what property they possess liable to taxation. The assessor is required by law to assess each man with what he owns on the first day of March, and no matter if you sell your house and lot on the 2nd
 day of March, and the assessor does not assess you until the middle of June, you will have to pay taxes on that house and lot just as though you owned it in June. It is a physical impossibility for the assessor to call on every man in the county on the first
 day of March and hence you will save both yourself and the county official much time, if you will prepare a list of your property on the first of March and lay it away where you can place your hand on it when he does come. the legislature of 1864, then meeting
 in October, passes a law making it the duty of the assessor at the time of assessing his county in 1865 and every ten years thereafter to take an enumeration of the inhabitants and industrial products of his county. In this enumeration there are 27 columns
 to be filled out and Assessor Sterling estimates that it will take more time to make the census this year than to make the assessment. For example in each family, he must list the number of males over 21 years, number between 10 and 21 and number under 10,
 and the females between 10 and 18. He must get the number of bushels of wheat, oats, barley, corn and rye; tons of hay, pounds of wool, butter, cheese and the number of horses, mules, cattle, hogs, sheep and all productions. The census rolls are to be turned
 over to the county clerk when compiled and it is his duty to keep a copy and send original to secretary of state.
