They also ran a wagon freight.
It was slow.
Accounts for being in many places.
Coopers are two separate families, Walts and Mine differ.
James was the scout.
Walter did not go back to Mo.
I have the complete line for Julia, just not where she died, Layne was not
able to find it either.
Walter far as I know, after getting to CA, had run in with the Modocs, moved
to Oregon, the Indian agent gave the ranch to the Indians ( via family talks
info)
William died in AZ because he hitched a ride to Reno, never got there.
They went the wrong way. More on file on that, his stone in AZ, Pearl In
Independence with William posted on stone also there with son James H Matney
and others.
Believe James was the one who went back.
Have to re check -
Carrel ( Carrelington) Settled on the Applegate, 1/2 mile past the new park,
and the swimming hole we used to go to.
Not ( all made trips across the plains both ways).
Elisha moved to Texas.
Just a few things.
I forgot how You are related ?
Dan

Going to get this if it kills me. Came across this hope it helps
Walter Jefferson MATNEY and Julia Ann COOPER lived in Alturas and Suprise
Valley c. 1870 - First child William Henry MATNEY born May 14, 1870 in
Alturas, died 1944 in AZ - possible additional issue of this couple: John,
James, Lewis, Jefferson and several daughters unknown. William H. MATNEY
married Sarah Pearl Penrose June 11, 1894 possibly in Modoc County.
I did not see any Matneys in your data base but noticed 21 Coopers? The
MATNEY, COOPERS and MAUPINS are related in Oregon, came from MO - W.J.
MATNEY was on the 1843 wagon train. I believe he traveled with Jesse
Applegate's cow train and was one of 200 scouts who built the first wagon
road to Oregon. I believe he was also with Jesse when he found his Applegate
trail in 1846 (?). Walter went back to MO in 1848 and brought his brothers
back with him. They settled at Yreka, Ashland and Jacksonville, followed
gold mining some. They didn't seem to stay in one place, makes it very
difficult to research them, but family tradition and some census records
indicate Walter settled in Modoc County, while his brother Carrel settled in
Siskiyou. Another brother, James, lived at Ashland, Jacksonville and Yreka.
All made several trips across the plains between MO and OR. I do not know
the parents of Julia Ann COOPER. Hope you can help.
