There are other types of DNA labs. Not just for family search.
I think I know of 6 used for archeology. Genealogy and Archeology go together. Lots of places claiming to be dna testers are resellers, do some research in ( whois ) to be sure you dont end up ripped off.

Sue, I use all three companies (Family Tree DNA, 23andMe and Ancestry). I have my personal preference (FTDNA) but they all perform the test accurately.

The important step is to upload the completed test to www.Gedmatch.com (a free site for comparison amongst the companies). Each company has it’s strengths and weaknesses for working with the data provided. #2 below is what I recommend as the best ‘bang’ for your buck, for most people.

My current strategy recommendations for folks getting started:

  1. If you only can afford $99, do your test at Family Tree DNA and upload the data to Gedmatch. (data for matching is now in 2 of the 4 ponds for ‘fishing for matches’)

  2. If you can afford a bit more, do the $99 test at Ancestry, transfer your test to FTDNA for $39 and upload to Gedmatch. (data for matching is now in 3 of the 4 ponds for ‘fishing for matches’)

  3. Test at 23andMe to finish getting data into the fourth ‘pond’ for fishing for matches, if you wish at some point.

  4. Alternately, depending on your family make-up – test 3 siblings, one at Ancestry, one at 23andMe, and one at FTDNA – upload all to Gedmatch.

  5. If testing an elderly individual, or one you may not have the possibility to repeat a test, test at Family Tree DNA and upload the data to Gedmatch [or if you want Y-DNA or mt-DNA, only FamilyTree DNA currently does those tests).
