-------- Original message --------From: Kith-n-Kin <Kith-n-Kin at cox.net> Date: 6/27/20 14:43 (GMT-08:00) To: 'SAWYER Layne G * SOS' <Layne.G.SAWYER at oregon.gov>, 'or-roots mail list' <or-roots at listsmart.osl.state.or.us> Subject: [or-roots] 1895 Census All,I recently was delighted to find a unique census for Marion County, on Ancestry.com, dated 1895. https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/2467/ This is an abstract, in two volumes, of the state census, created by the Willamette Valley Genealogical Society, abstracted by Jean Custer, Ann Hochspeier, Vergene Lowter, Connie Henderson, Betty Perry, produced by Helen Blair, Sherrill A Hochspeier, (Vol I, Vol. 1 Salem and Oregon State Penitentiary) and Jean Custer, Ann Hochspeier, Sherrill A Hochspeier, produced by Sherrill A Hochspeier (Vol II. other towns in Marion County.) As seen in the sample below, there is significant information that does not appear in any federal census. Height, weight, complexion, age, religious preference, voter, physical issues. This grouping includes my great-granduncle, Marion and his family, as well as my second great-grandmother, Catherine Nowlin (Graves) Palmer, born Virginia. She was…5’8” and weighted 190#. Here is her photo, probably about the same time. Fits the description. But who would have known about the height. Hard to find her brother, John Pinkard Graves, turns out to be abstracted as “G P Graves” and sandwiched between Carl Gronke and C K Graybill, p 213. Not sure who gave the information, but he’s listed as born in Missouri (moved there from Virginia c 1830) 5’10” 170#, dark complexion, Silverton PO, farmer, protestant, voter, married, 72. Wife Mary (Maria) Glover Graves, b MO, 5’4” 180# dark, protestant, age 69 and two of their eleven children are in the household. NOW, of course, I want more. So, the question is. What happened to the counties other than Marion? On the OR Archives website I found an index with Multnomah and Morrow, but not my other “counties of interest.” Does anyone have information on this particular census? Thanks, Pat DunfordTucson
