"In the early 1850's roads were almost non-existent.. . . therefore =
transportation was arranged around
navigable waterways. The need to connect the outlying farm communities =
with dependable transportation was
becoming ever more pressing.
In 1851 a railroad was proposed by Mr. H. M. Knighton to run from St. =
Helens on the Columbia River, across
Cornelieus Pass, to Lafayette. . . Nothing came of this [and so on]
The first actual railroad operation in Oregon was a portage railroad =
along the Columbia River at the
Cascades (presently Cascade Locks).
[and so on - much surveying over the next 15 years]
On October 15, 1871 the Oregon and California was in operation the =
entire length of the Willamette Valley
from East Portland to Eugene City.
[Now, from the maps, by 1884, the lines extended south to Ashland.]
By 1887, the Southern Pacific had taken over the California and Oregon =
RR and by December 17, 1887 the O&C
mainline was completed over the Siskiyous to a connection with the SP =
controlled line from California
which had been completed by the Central Pacific on June 1, 1887. Thus =
was formed a continuous rail
connection from Portland to New Orleans (approximately 3200 miles) -- =
all under one management."=20

For railroad buffs there are two books, one on early railroads in Oregon =
and the other on early street car
lines. I read these two books they are both excellent reading.
The railroad book is " Stations West"
The street car book is "Fares Please"
