California, to her sister, Nellie (Palmer)
Dunford in Medford, Oregon, dated Jan 8, 1935.
The letter starts off about son Hal going to Sacramento with the Guard =
to play at the inauguration of the
new governor, goes on to thank Nellie and Ike (Oscar W. Dunford) for =
sending a cured ham, and talks about
where various members of the family are at the time, and how "guilty" =
she was going to feel about them not
getting a piece of the ham <G>. . . Then,
". . .that clipping you sent -- concerning the Geo Hodge row is like a =
voice from the past -- if I'm not
terribly mistaken this man is the lusty youngster of 2 weeks old that I =
washed diapers for nearly 42 years
ago [1893]. I was not present when he was born, Mrs. Van Orden did that, =
but I stayed 2 weeks after she
left. They had 6 boys [there?] the [procter?] had charge of the Solado =
Post Office, which was in their 4
room house. George Hodge the Papa was building an old fashioned =
lumbermill, with a mill wheel in the Big
Elk River, he had a man, one Ellsworth Zilliard helping him. I cooked =
for the whole gang & did the
washing. I was 17 years old or nearly that - it was in Feb. I'll bet =
the Row was over hunting grounds for
deer. the Hodges were all great hunters. Well, I hope nothing serious =
comes of it. Some time I would like
to see that country again, if they ever get roads. . . . "
Now, I checked the census for 1900, and it appears that Nettie was a =
couple of years off. According to
that, George, jr., was born Dec of 1887. Nettie was born in 1879, which =
would have made her only about 8
years old.=20
James A - - May 1885
George A - - Dec 1887
William C - - April 1890
Charles M, - - May 1892
Walter - - May 1893
Patsy (Patrick) - - Jan 1895
Giles - - May 1899
So, it looks as though Patsy is probably the child mentioned, if indeed =
it was in February that Nettie was
washing and cooking, or Walter, if she got the month wrong as well.
But, regardless, what about George A. and the "row" What was that all =
about, anyway?
Regards,
Pat (in Tucson)
