Pioneer Certificates -- what documentation?

Barb,

Thanks for the information on the certificates.
Does anyone know what proof is required? I can come up with some
documentation that my GG-grandparents came to Oregon in the 1850s (DLCs), but
so far I've come up with no documentation of my grandfather's birth.

As far as we can ascertain, my grandfather, George Alfred Marks, was
born October 12, 1874, "in the Willamette Valley." His parents were
James P. Marks and Charity Ann (Noble) Marks. Charity died in
1875. The Marks and Noble clans were in transition at that time, moving
from Sweet Home area to Prineville area (Marks Creek).

I can't
locate this Marks family on any censuses. George's father James P.
remarried, a Margaret Hedgpeth, around 1878, and the family moved to Wyoming
around 1880, then to Montana. I can't find them on the 1880 census in
either state, I understand the 1890 census was destroyed, then George's father
and stepmother were dead before the 1900 census. George doesn't show up
there either, and he died in 1906. Hmm, I know he existed!

Without a birth certificate or family Bible or something proving my
grandfather's parentage, would I be eligible for the Pioneer
Certificate? As far as that goes, there's no birth certificate for my
father. He was born in Rosebud, Montana in 1906 and I guess there was a
fire where certificates were lost. He had a dickens of a time getting
social security as I recall.

What kind of proof do I need to come up
with?

Thanks.

Marilyn
