I was in Dallas when we had that cold spell in 1949-50. My oldest son was three months old. I was babysitting a family about 6 blocks from our apartment, and I bundled him up and carried him across those icy streets every morning. I can remember the thermometer at Guy's Hardware saying 10 degrees.
The Silver Thaw I remember was in 1942. My mother was pregnant with my baby sister, then she got mumps, then when she was sick in bed came the silver thaw, and the electricity was out, and Daddy cooked soup on the wood stove. I was in the 7th grade.
