Hi Gene - those are great memories of a long ago Portland.

I lived in Montavilla from 1935 until 1941 (and various other places prior to that in Portland and Parkrose) and went to Vestal school on 82nd St. My brothers and I went swimming in the Montavilla Park and to the Granada for movies. After we moved to Parkrose we went swimming in May's Lake (and sometimes the Columbia, althought that was a very big no no). We lived on 106th and Simpson and walked up to Sandy to catch the bus to 82nd, then walked the few blocks to 72nd for the movies at the Roseway theater. It was a lot of fun growing up in those times even though we had very little.

I have written my story of growing up during the depression and WWII. I gave copies to my 5 children and 7 grandchildren, plus my sister, brothers and cousins at Christmas. All seem to have enjoyed it and are waiting for the rest of the story. I am not ready for the story to be done yet - i may be 75 but have some living to do, genealogy to research and painting pretty pictures to do first. My story is finished up to this point and is now being edited.

I put in a lot of genealogy with stories of the granparents and great grandmother I knew, so they would know they were people, not just names and dates.

I think these memories are so important to preserve even if they don't seem important in themselves. Otherwise our gr grandchildren (I have 2 so far) will not know who we were.

Have a good day
