Subject: [or-roots] Summerville Railroad
>
>
> I
have a copy of an 1880 map issued by the Oregon Railway and Navigation
>
Co.
> showing both their lines and projected lines. The map shows
no line into
> Summerville but there was a line from Umatilla going
down through La
Grande
> and
> Union to Baker City. My
Grandfather, A.H. Gaylord was a telegrapher for
> the
> railroad
and by the mid-1890's was the stationmaster in Union. His
>
father-in-law, Michael Travers, worked as a laborer for the O R & N
as
> early as 1861,
> starting in Celilo. By 1885 the
railroad had 2 transcontinental
> connections, one
> with the
Northern Pacific at Wallula and the other with the Union Pacific
> at
> Huntington. This information is in an excellent history of the
Union
> Pacific
> by Jeff Asay,
> "Union Racific
Northwest". which I have if anyone wants more information
> on
> early lines.
> Phyl Purdum
> <A
