<DIV>I am descended from Cyrus Benjamin Hawley and his wife, Elizabeth (Eliza)
Smith. He was born ca. 1812 in New York and later lived in London,
Ontario, Canada; Michigan, and Iowa before traveling to Oregon with the Gilliam
wagon train. He had a donation land claim near McMinville. His
daughter, Ann Elizabeth, married John Wright Stephens and they had four
sons. She died when the boys were young and he remarried and moved to
Washington. Their son, Irvin Hawley Stephens married Anna Mary
Shields, the daughter of Henry Shields and Tabitha Whealdon. Joseph
Whealdon and his wife were Quakers who settled near Centralia, Washington.
Later their married daughter, Tabitha, moved the area with her husband and
family from Illinois. Henry Shields was one of the first Sheriffs of
Centralia. Irvin Hawley Stephens and Anna Mary Shields raised a large family in
Raymond, Pacific County, Washington. Their daughter, Constance Tabitha
Stephens was my paternal grandmother.</DIV>

<DIV>A detailed history of the Stephens family in Oregon, "Some Descendents of
Emmor Jefferson Stephens", was written and published privately by Edmund Fisher
of Portland and Gresham. This is an extremely well-researched work and
also includes information about the family of Emmor Stephens' brother, Isaac
Stephens.</DIV>
