Hmmm - good question. Apparently Jefferson was at first Conser's Ferry named for Jacob Consr, a pioneer of 1848. The townsite seems to have moved up and down the Santiam River a mile or two and was named Syracuse and Santiam. The name became Jefferson, named for Thomas Jefferson. The post office was established June 13, 1861.Other early names mentioned are Milton Hale, pioneer 1841 and Samuel S. Miller. McArthur's Oregon Geographic Names, 6th Ed.
