Glen,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this. (I have seen Les'
subsequent info). I did not find anything about AH Robie working for
Palmer, but he may well have. Palmer was appointed by Abernathy,
Oregon Territorial Governor, in early 1849 as Indian agent. He was
already in Oregon at that time. II Stevens came from Washington (DC)
in 1853, when he was appointed first territorial governor of the new
Washington Territory. That position also carried the assignment as
Director of Indian Affairs for the Washington Territory. Stevens
tended to "fudge" his territorial lines so often his troops and staff
managed to zig-zag back and forth across the Oregon boarder.

In 1855 Wm Craig was an officer in the Washington Volunteers. In 1856
Stevens sent AH Robie to take a wagon train of supplies to the
"freindly" Nez Perez. Stevens was hoping to rally them into fighting
along side the volunteers against the non-treaty Nez Perez. Craig
headed a detatchment of volunteers, and along with Spotted Eagle and
some of his men, served as escort. The Indians were just a bit miffed
at Stevens so they turned the wagon train away, but allowed Craig to
stay. As you said, he was "married into the Nez Perez family". His
father-in-law was Old James. Craig originally came West as a mountain
man. I don't know any more about him than that, and many of those
mountain men were rather annonymous about their past. I did come
across one vague referrence once that William Craig may have been an
assumed name. As I say, it was pretty vague so I put it under the
catagory of speculation.
