<DIV>I just noticed you mentioned Debbie Lee - she and I correspond a lot. Neither of us have been able to totally resolve the Samuel/Nancy issue so far, and who their parents are.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Both Samuel and Lucinda Jane Moore Sumner came to Oregon - they were here as early as 1877, when their daughter Sarah Jane Sumner Madden married Dennis Madden March 15, 1877 in Polk County, OR, at "the house of Samuel Sumner." That's what their marriage certificate says. Family letters I have copies of say Sarah died in July 1877. However, Samuel and Lucinda J. are back in Linn Co., MO for the 1880 census; he's a farmer and she keeps house.</DIV>

<DIV>I think the biggest problem with putting this family together is Samuel Sr, and Sarah had several children that we can't find. For the kids with them in 1860, John M is with Clark and his wife Louise in 1880, so I listed him as a son of Clark's. But the other two are to young to be Clarks so because I had a question these kids I made the following note in my records. </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2>
<P>1860, MO, Linn Co., twp 59, range 18, HH 215 Sam Sumner 74, NC.- Sarah, 70, NC,- Clark,28, IND, - John W, 17,Ind. - Elijah, 14, INd - George M, 13, Ind. ---- John, Elijah and George may be Samuel and Sarah's children as listed in this census but more that likely are grandchildren. </P></FONT></DIV>
<DIV> We do have one that fits into this family but I do not know where yet --- Calvin, B - ABT 1852, IND. In 1910 he is in Oregon, Clackamas Co., his father born in NC. In 1900 he is in Nodaway co, MO. ---- so he belongs to this family. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Another problem with tracking this family is they don't seem to live close together, they kind of all go they own way. That makes proving them a child of this person or that tough! Plus we are missing some (maybe lots) of Samuel and Sarah's kids. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I'll send you the census of Calvin if you want but it sounds like you are like me and can get most of the census records. Also I added below what little I am fairly sure about. I know it is not much yet but slowly, ever so slow, they are falling into place. </DIV>

<DIV>Many thanks for your response. I hope you will be feelng better soon. We get colds and stuff from our grandkids, too - they are such loving little characters, aren't they?</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I have been slogging ahead, and around in circles, and ran into some interesting stuff on an LDS site: Samuel SUMMERS (b. Abt. 1786 in NC) and Mrs. Sarah SUMMERS (b. Abt. 1790 in NC), with some of the children I have listed for Samuel and Sara Sumner in Indiana and Missouri - Samuel, Clark, John, Elijah, and George. There isn't much more information, and it was submitted by someone in 1991, with no other details. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The similar data I have on Sam and Sarah SUMNER is from an 1860 census in Missouri, and someone else I have been writing back and forth with thought that John, Elijah and George might be grandsons, as they seem so much younger. The census in 1860 says Sumner for sure, so I don't know if you have any clues on all that.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I can't dismiss SUMMERS as some information I found on the LDS site helped me track down Sarah Jane Sumner's marriage in 1877 to Dennis Madden in Polk county, OR - in the Oregon Archives. I may have said that already!?</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>No luck in tracing this "lead" in the census records I looked at through ancestry.com at the library. There are tons of Sumner, Summer, Summers all over North Carolina it seems. I tried look at as many of them as I could. If I could identify a county, that would help. I think I saw some interesting info on Summer/Summers/Sumner lines in the Sumner Family Association, or somewhere like that that I will look into again. And I've ordered some books, too.</DIV>

<DIV>Take care, </DIV>

<DIV>Good afternoon Paulette;</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>My grandson was with Judy and I over the weekend and apparently gave us some kind of bug. So, I haven't gotten much done on research. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I have looked at the Sumner's enough to see why no one has taken this family farther back. It looks like there are possibly two other families in Indiana along with our Samuel's. One family from VA that came via Ohio to Indiana and other that came from north or south Carolina via Kentucky -- and of course our Samuel from NC. I think the one that came though Kentucky will be a brother to Samuel And as Ohio is not that far north, that family may also be kin. I have started to find and separate these families to see if I can find a common link. So far all I have is a lot of names and do not at this point see a commonality. At this point I usually get out four or five display stands and start writing them down because I am just to old anymore to keep them all in my head. Someone needs to write a genealogy program that will sort several family lines but if one exist, I do not know of it.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>So, I am just letting you know where I am and that I am still working --- even if it is a little slow.</DIV>

<DIV>Hi Paulette;</DIV>

<DIV>Yes we have the same family at least the one we are researching - Sumner's and Moore's. I am actually down the Capps line, which is the mother I have for Lucinda Jane Moore. </DIV>

<DIV>Rebecca Capp's brother, James Calloway Capps will be my line. BUT ---- your email has thrown me into a bit of a problem with Rebecca Capps as the mother of Lucinda Moore. But all the dates are just enough off to make me wonder. </DIV>

<DIV>>Dear Hollis Holcomb,</DIV>
<DIV>></DIV>
<DIV>>I have been searching for information on Samuel Sumner (Abt. 1830-1897) and his wife Lucinda Jane Moore Sumner (Abt. 1832 -November 1, 1919). They are my great great great grandparents. Their children were Sarah Jane Sumner Madden ( Abt. 1852 - 1877) and James Clark(e) Sumner (1855 - 1945). (James Clark is my great grandfather, although he wasn't such a great guy). Samuel and Lucinda are in Linn Co., MO as of the 1880 census, but he died in Oregon in 1897. I wonder if we are connected?</DIV>
<DIV>></DIV>
<DIV>>I had the information on Lucinda Jane Moore Sumner's birth county as Linn Co., MO, (which is on her death certificate) but had her mother's name wrong, so I'm not sure we coincide exactly. I thought her mother was Margaret Hornbeck, but I'm not sure where I got that. It could be that the wife of David Moore, Squire Moore's father, was M.H. Lucinda's death certificate says "unknown" for her mother. I have Lucinda's father as Squire Moore, which is on her death certificate (November 1, 1919 in Portland, OR; buried in Etna Cemetery, Polk County, Oregon, near Salem, along with her husband Samuel and daughter Sarah Jane Sumner Madden). Her</DIV>
<DIV>>death certificate is recorded in the Oregon State Archives.</DIV>
<DIV>></DIV>
<DIV>>After Samuel died in 1897, Lucinda lived in Salem and Portland, OR, I think for many years. She had Civil War Widow's Benefits which are on record. (I have copies of this). He seemed to have been in the Missouri Militia.</DIV>
<DIV>></DIV>
<DIV>>Sarah Jane Sumner married Dennis Madden March 15, 1877 in Polk County, OR, but I think, according to family letters I have, she died in July of that same year. I have a copy of their marriage certificate from Polk Co., OR., but no official death records.</DIV>
<DIV>></DIV>
<DIV>>James Clark Sumner married Lucinda Frances Tremain, and one of their sons, Samuel (1886 - 1952) was my mother's father. J. C. and Lucinda are buried in Portland, Oregon, as well as my grandfather Samuel and several of his siblings.</DIV>
<DIV>></DIV>
<DIV>>I have been trying to track Samuel Sumner Jr's parents, who I also have as Samuel Sr. (b. Abt. 1786 - 1789 in NC) and Sarah Jane Clark Sumner (b. Abt. 1785 in NC). I think he had a sister Nancy who married Findley McClintock in Indiana. I think Sarah had a brother William Embly Clark, but I have not been able to document all these connections. Do any of these names connect for you?</DIV>
