1st newspaper in Douglas county, Roseburg was the <EM>Ensign </EM>and it started
publication in May 1867. The the <EM>Plaindealer</EM> was started in March
1870. The the <EM>Ensign</EM> was sold and became the <EM>Pantograph</EM>
in 1872 and then became in 1875 the <EM>Independent. </EM> In
1877 another paper began publication called the <EM>Western Star.
</EM>Then in 1882 the <EM>Independent's</EM> name was changed to the
<EM>Roseburg Review. </EM>After 1886 the <EM>Umpqua Herald </EM>started up
and was the first in the state to be a semi-weekly. In 1888 the
<EM>Review</EM> and the <EM>Umpqua Herald</EM> merged. In 1906 the
<EM>Plaindealer</EM> was sold and became the <EM>Umpqua Valley News.</EM>
