That is Inter-Library-Loan, a great feature of both academic as well as public libraries. The librarians and staff of ILL Depts. are trained to make requests for patrons that cannot be patron-initiated, which means the patron can fill out a request form for a book, or microfilm, or periodical photocopies, etc., which the patron has searched for online (like through a WorldCat database, or say, through the Library of Congress database) - the request goes to ILL staff and the staff can order the item, or a certain number (limited by copyright laws) of copies if the item can't circulate.

I have discovered that many genealogical books and other resources are not allowed to circulate, but photocopies can be made, or sometimes the lending library will let me have a book of theirs for "In Library Use Only" to look at for a week or two, but not take away with me. I can make notes or copies at the library. My Cedar Mills Library and the Tigard Library of the Washington County, OR, Library System have ancestry.com and HeritageQuest for use in their libraries, but also have special forms for ordering many other genealogical materials and the great staff to deal with these. Sorry to go on and on.

Paulette

-----Original Message-----

The ancestry.com library edition we have at my local library
of Cedar Mills, OR has census records, birth, marriage, and many other vital
records, as well as trees and messageboards (but can't interact with these
boards) - many fine pieces of information, but not some of the features I saw
and used that big "free" weekend - I wish I could afford to have it at home,
but can't at this time. I can certainly value the service over having to
travel all over the country, but I am finding library ILL very useful and as
one gets better at the query process, the answers seem to become more
complete. A great and helpful book for searching is The Genealogist's
Companion, from which I have learned a lot about how to search and research.
And I love the wonderful volunteers of Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness in
various states. They are the best at helping, and explaining searches, etc.
that I have run into (this group is great, too!) and one can make smal and/or
regular donations to them for their kind
assistance.

Paulette
