<DIV><STRONG>Space # 15</STRONG> (HELP! I don't know how to read
this brand, but it looks like a large backwards letter <STRONG>"C"</STRONG> with
a horizontal line through it, so that it looks almost like an
<STRONG>"E".</STRONG></DIV>

at the top of the right ear.</STRONG></DIV>

<DIV>You know, that backwards "C" makes sense for a Chapman name. I don't
know how to "read" brands though. I'm not in law enforcement, but I don't
know why your ear marks wasn't proof those were your goats! It should have
been. </DIV>

<DIV>Hey! My late father-in-law would be proud of me for helping you
folks! He really enjoyed his job and visiting with folks and he loved
livestock! He didn't like the book work though. I enjoy looking at
the little red book because I recognize lots of names from different places we
have lived in Oregon. Who would have thought this book would have come in
handy to help people with genealogy? I copied pages from the brand
registration book in La Grande for our family members, and this made a fun,
attractive page for our books. You might try checking to see if the Lane
County courthouse has such a book too.</DIV>

brand thread because I didn't think it would be of more than passing interest
to me, but it just occurred to me that you might have a brand registered for
either or both Francis Marion Chapman or Clare Decker Chapman in Lane county
sometime between 1914 or so and when the book was published, though I can't
swear we had a brand, I know when the goats were being rustled we had no
"proof" of ownership, even when we caught the rustlers red handed with a truck
load of our goats the fact they had our ear marks wasn't
"proof."<BR><BR>Leslie
