Arkansas. The Howell that lived in Grant County was Lafayette Howell. He had
an older brother Andrew who eventually went on to California and died in Hollywood
in the early 1930’s. Another older brother was Stanford Howell who settled
eventually in Morrow County and died in Hardman. Then there were the twins
Doctor Caswell Howell and I can’t remember his brother’s name and a younger
brother Thomas and another that died in his early thirties unmarried. One of
the Sisters married a Llewelen and that is all I can remember off hand. I have
it all at home.

I found out a few years ago (when I sent for my grandmothers original Social
Security Application) that she was born in "rural Grant County". Once
I started really doing genealogy and was working on her Howell family I came
across Dixie Town. I couldn't help but wonder if that wasn't where she was born
since her father's family came originally from Arkansas. She had an uncle who
settled in Grant County but the rest of the clan moved to Morrow County to
Hardman. I sure wish I could prove her exact birth place but I guess it will
just have to be a speculation on my part. Thanks, Dale From: or-roots-bounces@listsmart.osl.state.or.us

Dale - it's still called Prairie City, but was originally called Dixie Town.
Roxanne Smith has created a marvelous website for Grant County at:
http://gesswhoto.com/grant.htm. Prairie City is covered quite well there - I
just went there to check it out & the names bring back such wonderful
memories of our years there. You can find the Grant County Genealogical
Society's president's name & email address at the bottom of that website.
(I was a member when we started that society.) Years ago we visited my dentist,
Virgil Belknap in Idaho, before we moved to Prairie City. He told me he was
born there & indeed his father was a prominent Prairie City doctor. My
little granddaughter used to call it "Pretty City" and that's very
appropriate! Grant County people are wonderful & I miss them. ~Gerrie In a

that and has that always been its name? Dale _______________________________________________
