Wiss*</U>,</EM>  and it turned up some genealogy records for people 

entering the Oregon territory in 1844, including several people named 

"Wiss".</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT face=Arial>Short of that -wiss- is an abbreviation of wissenshaft 

which means roughly 'scientific knowledge' which is pretty far a field for a 

cryptic tombstone inscription.</FONT></DIV>
