<DIV>I've found that honor of being the "first" of most anything in any county,
etc. is a distinction many families like to pass down to their descendants.
These legends should be checked out, because there's often a grain of truth in
there. Use them as clues for further research. I learned long ago
not to tell my family their legends weren't totally factual. Each
generation repeated what they heard their parents say, but as the younger
generation HEARD it, and remembered it (or NOT), with variations as told by one
member as opposed to another. I've heard lots of Oregon pioneer
descendants speak of their ancestor as having "the first" Donation Land Claim in
Oregon. </DIV>

<DIV>Be sure to check out the names of those who gave affidavits, as often they
were related, came from the same area back east or were nearby neighbors in
Oregon. It gets more complicated with second marriages. Oregon's
early probate record indexes are priceless. Thanks to all the volunteers
who helped us find these important family records.</DIV>
