my son and I located a Civil War headstone on private property in Baker Co.
for a great grand uncle. It too had no date, just rank and company. I sent a
photo of it to David Samuelson and he located from NARA (I think) a card
showing the same information plus a date. Why it was not on the stone is a
mystery. The govt. supplied CW headstones from about 1864 to 1903 and this one
was on the pinkish side. My grandson, who had recently finished a five year
enlistment with the OR Ntl Guard recognized it as a military headstone as soon
as he saw the photo we took. If you have Ancestry you can see a copy of the
card by searching for James FitzJames Cooper (J.F.J. COOPER on the headstone).
