<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>BIOGRAPHY: Hon.
Alanson Hinman, who died Monday afternoon, July20th, was<BR>born in New
York<BR> state May 2nd, 1822, having passed his 86th
birthday on the 2nd oflast<BR>May. In 1844<BR> he came
across the plains and settled in Walla Walla where Dr.Whitman<BR>had
just<BR> established the college now known as Whitman
college. Mr. Hinmantaught<BR>in the<BR> school there for
about a year after which he came to Salem and spent<BR>several years
in<BR> eductional work in what is now known as
Willamette University. Laterhe<BR>came to<BR> Forest
Grove and has made his home here for more than 50 years. In1866<BR>he was
a<BR> member of the Legislature from this County and
soon after wasappointed<BR>collector of<BR> customs at
Astoria where he made his home for about 4 years.Returning
to<BR>Forest<BR> Grove he established a store which he
conducted for a number ofyears,<BR>retiring from<BR>
business in 1890. Mr. Hinman married Miss Martha Garrish in
1846,eight<BR>children<BR> were born to them, four of
whom are living; Mrs. A.R. Leabo,
Dr.Alanson<BR>Hinman,<BR> Miss Mary Hinman, all of
Forest Grove and Oliver Hinman, ofEllensburg,<BR>
Washington, the oldest son, Arvid Hinman, having grown to manhoodand<BR>died
in<BR> 1892. Mrs. Hinman died in 1864 and some time
later Mr. Hinmanmarried<BR>Sophia<BR> Margaret Bowen to
whom two sons were born, Carl Hinman and
FrankHinman,<BR>both<BR> of Forest Grove.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>BIOGRAPHY: Mr. Hinman
was the last of the original Board ofDirectors of<BR>Pacific University,
being<BR> a member at the time of the granting of the
charter to theUniversity in<BR>1854. For a<BR> number of
years he was President of the Board, having retired fromactive<BR>service
of<BR> that office about two years ago.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>BIOGRAPHY: He was
twice elected Mayor of the city of Forest Groveand for<BR>many years was
one<BR> of the prominent figues in political and
financial circles.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>BIOGRAPHY: A
proclamation was issued by Mayor Laughlin that business<BR>houses close from 10
a.a.<BR> to 12 m. on Wednesday, July 22nd. The funeral
services were held at10<BR>o'clock<BR> Wednesday
forenoon at the First Congregational church, Rev. DanielStaver<BR>in
charge,<BR> assisted by Rev. Herbert Boyd and President
W.N. Ferrin. Mrs. W.W.<BR>McEldowney<BR> sang "Nearer,
My God, to Thee" and "Bye and Bye". Interment was
atthe<BR>Buxton<BR> cemetery.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>BIOGRAPHY: In the
loss of Mr. Hinman Forest Grove loses a brilliant<BR>thinker and a man who
has<BR> contributed much toward the advancement and
betterment of the city.</FONT></DIV>
