pertaining to the post offices of Wasco county was supplied by Edwin R. Payne,
Salem, Oregon post office clerk, stamp and cover collector who said, "my stamp
and cover collecting hobby led to old covers (envelopes) postmarked from post
offices in Oregon that no longer exist. In order to know where these places were
I started a list of dead post offices. Others gave me help and I made research
in old postal guides in various libraries, but such directories gave no dates of
establishment or discontinuation of offices. I interested Lewis McArthur in the
subject and through him and a close friend in Washington, D.C., we hired girls
to copy the Oregon post office ledgers, about 4000 work sheets, in the National
Archives! From those sheets I have compiled the Oregon post office list of all
offices! They could be obtained in no other way and from no other source. All of
this information will be in the third edition of Lewis A. McArthur's OREGON
GEOGRAPHIC NAMES which will be off the Binford & Mort press in Portland November
1952. It is a must for history lovers and collectors."</span></p>

Irene Velma Layton McAfee, 85 years old, formerly of Rogue River, died October 9, 2006 in Central Point at her home. A Celebration of Life was held October 18 at the Rogue River Assembly of God Church with Pastor Loren Short officiating. Private interment will be at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass. Chapel of the Valley-LB Hall Funeral Home, Grants Pass, was in charge of arrangements. She was born September 7, 1921 in Sturkie, AR to Thomas and Eva Matney. She moved to Grants Pass in 1965 from Half Moon Bay, CA. She owned the Homestead Cafe in Rogue River from 1966 to 1970. She owned the Tip Top Cafe in Rogue River from 1970 to 1979. She was a member of the Rogue River Assembly of God Church. Her interests included quilting, gardening and cooking. She is survived by two sons, Timothy Layton of Central Point and Charles Layton of LaQuinta, CA; a sister, Ruby Miller of Rogue River; a brother, Harley Matney of Oroville, CA; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Peden.<br>
