Most people dont know, San Francisco was a booming town by 1820's and people were already traveling north.

What I thought was interesting, of the Matney brothers - 6, 3 went to Frisco while 3 went to the East coast and walked back among the Indians and other hazards with the 1843 train. Matheny people were real good at getting into places where they could get into the lime lights of history.

Matney sorta got lost in the shuffle, and Joe Meek just sorta boomed his way to eternal history.

Thanks for your kind response. Very interesting information - also thanks. Yes, Into the Setting Sun, that's the book - thanks for giving me the title; just could not remember it. It was a good story, but I was puzzled by some of the P.O.V. as well, such as for example about who was the "first" leader of the "first" wagon train to Oregon, etc. Very interesting.

Perhaps the Matneys and Matheneys were the same lines at some earlier date. Such as is probablw e with Tatham, Tatum, Tatom, and Tatem. And I have always wondered but not found any proofs that Ballards and Bullards are from the same original name. My Bullard ancestors are also interesting but not a main research for me, only as far as they connect to the Capps, Moore, McClintock and Sumner lines I am closer to.
