You will also see photographs of the places Mackenzie traveled - as the route was retraced by local historian Nick Sheedy several years ago. Nick will speak at 5 pm in the Fireplace Room at the Hoodoo Ski Lodge.

Nick's slide show - "Donald Mackenzie's Travels, 1810-1820, and the Early Fur Trade in the Old Oregon Country," will also describe Donald Mackenzie's movements with the Pacific Fur Company between 1811 and 1814, including his first trek into the Willamette Valley when he explored the river that now bears his name. You will hear about Mackenzie's careers as a fur trader for the Northwest Company, 1816-1820, and as Governor of The Hudson's Bay Company's Red River Colony, as well as put that period in historical context, discussing the early Oregon fur trade generally and giving some details on other fur traders and trappers who were in the area during that time.

The presentation is free, but donations will be accepted to defray costs. Nick is from John Day, have been researching the fur trade for about 12 years a nd in doing so has traveled coast to coast and dug up obscure records at many archives. He is currently writing a book on the old hunter, John Day (1770-1820), who was an associate of Donald MacKenzie. The two explorers traveled across the continent together in 1811 and worked together again between 1816 and 1820. Mackenzie was the executor of John Day's 1820 will. Nick is a 1996 graduate of Linfield College, and have had articles published in journals, including the Oregon Historical Quarterly.

The schedule for Hoodoo's Winter Carnival on February 11th is attached to this message.

``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
McKenzie River Bicentennial events are sponsored by many McKenzie River organizations, businesses, and individuals.
