style="FONT-FAMILY: georgia,serif"><BR>This <B><FONT size=4>Saturday, February
11th</FONT></B>, at the <FONT size=4><B>Hoodoo Winter Carnival </B>-
Enjoy</FONT> the opportunity to hear the story of Donald Mackenzie's travels
overland from the Missouri River to Pacific Coast in the winter of
1811-1812. You will also see photographs of the places Mackenzie
traveled - as the route was retraced by local historian Nick Sheedy
several years ago. Nick will speak at <B>5 pm</B> in the Fireplace
Room at the Hoodoo Ski Lodge. </SPAN><BR
style="FONT-FAMILY: georgia,serif"><BR style="FONT-FAMILY: georgia,serif"><SPAN
style="FONT-FAMILY: georgia,serif">Nick's slide show - "Donald Mackenzie's
Travels, 1810-1820, and the Early Fur Trade in the Old Oregon Country," will
also describe Donald Mackenzie's movements with the Pacific Fur Company between
1811 and 1814, including his first trek into the Willamette Valley when he
explored the river that now bears his name. You will hear about
Mackenzie's careers as a fur trader for the Northwest Company, 1816-1820, and as
Governor of The Hudson's Bay Company's Red River Colony, as well as put that
period in historical context, discussing the early Oregon fur trade generally
and giving some details on other fur traders and trappers who were in the area
during that time. </SPAN><BR style="FONT-FAMILY: georgia,serif"><BR
style="FONT-FAMILY: georgia,serif"><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: georgia,serif">The
presentation is free, but donations will be accepted to defray costs. Nick is
from John Day, have been researching the fur trade for about 12 years a nd in
doing so has traveled coast to coast and dug up obscure records at many
archives. He is currently writing a book on the old hunter, John Day
(1770-1820), who was an associate of Donald MacKenzie. The two explorers
traveled across the continent together in 1811 and worked together again between
1816 and 1820. Mackenzie was the executor of John Day's 1820 will.
Nick is a 1996 graduate of Linfield College, and have had articles published in
journals, including the Oregon Historical Quarterly.</SPAN><BR><BR>The schedule
