I only have FTM 16 so it may not work the same. I am assuming that this is only happening for one child not for everyone. With that in mind, go to the parents. If the child is listed, check to see if there are "Other parents" ( in FTM 16 it is in the People menu). If there are other parents (even if not named), go to them & then detach the child in question from unnamed parents. It sounds like the these Unknown parents/spouses have been made the preferred parents.

I find a
couple that I have entered as husband and wife. I bring up a child to
make a minor addition like add a date of death. When I bring up the
child, I lose the links to the parents. Instead, I get “[Unknown spouse]
& [Unknown spouse]”.

If I go back and bring up the parents, the new data is displayed for the
child. If I now bring up the child I get the “Unknown’s” for the parents.

If I attempt to merge the known and unknown parent I get the message that
I cannot merge since there is already a direct relationship between the
two individuals.

Anybody know what I’m doing wrong?
