<div dir="ltr"><div>I remember doing the Maypole dance every May 1 when I was in school. We also used to make baskets of flowers out of old cottage cheese containers and putting them on the neighbors door knobs on May Day. That all stopped when the Cold War began and the USSR's most celebrated day was May 1st. What a shame that such an innocent tradition should die because of politics.</div>
<div>I am really happy to hear that Beverly is still alive. So is my mother who is now a roaring 94 and going strong.</div><div>Dale</div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br><br><div class="gmail_quote">On Sun, Apr 28, 2013 at 6:16 PM, <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:l.horine@comcast.net" target="_blank">l.horine@comcast.net</a>></span> wrote:<br>

Yamhill was, and is, a great place to grow up, and there are reminders of characters from Beverly's other books in Portland as well. If you've never gotten to wind a maypole, she can show you how to do that!<div>

<b>Sent: </b>Sunday, April 28, 2013 5:25:23 PM<br><b>Subject: </b>[or-roots] an interesting book<div><div class="h5"><br><br><div dir="ltr"><div>Perhaps you all already know about this book, but I came across it at the library and checked it out. The title is: A girl from Yamhill: a memoir. Written by the popular children's author Beverly Cleary. It is an autobiography and is a fascinating read if you had parents or grandparents who grew up in Oregon in the early 1920's through the depression years, etc. She is an excellent writer and you can really get a feel for what it was like back then. My mom was born in 1919 and this was a perfect book for me to read to understand what things were like back then. I would highly recommend it to anyone who might be interested in this era of Oregon, especially the Yamhill area.</div>
<div>I think it is really helpful for a genealogist to read about the area her ancestors were from in the form of autobiographies when you can find them.</div><div>Happy hunting,</div><div>Dale in Southern California</div>
