Jefferson MATNEY and Julia Ann COOPER lived in Alturas and Suprise Valley c.
1870 – First child William Henry MATNEY born May 14, 1870 in Alturas, died
1944 in AZ – possible additional issue of this couple: John, James, Lewis,
Jefferson and several daughters unknown. William H. MATNEY married Sarah Pearl

did not see any Matneys in your data base but noticed 21 Coopers? The MATNEY,
COOPERS and MAUPINS are related in Oregon, came from MO – W.J. MATNEY was on
the 1843 wagon train. I believe he traveled with Jesse Applegate’s cow train
and was one of 200 scouts who built the first wagon road to Oregon. I believe
he was also with Jesse when he found his Applegate trail in 1846 (?). Walter
went back to MO in 1848 and brought his brothers back with him. They settled
at Yreka, Ashland and Jacksonville, followed gold mining some. They didn’t
seem to stay in one place, makes it very difficult to research them, but
family tradition and some census records indicate Walter settled in Modoc
County, while his brother Carrel settled in Siskiyou. Another brother, James,
lived at Ashland, Jacksonville and Yreka. All made several trips across the
plains between MO and OR. I do not know the parents of Julia Ann COOPER. Hope
you can help.</P>
