artifact identification workshop. The workshop will provide fundamental<br>training in the identification, relative dating, and proper<br>documentation of intact and fragmentary historic artifacts commonly<br>encountered in the field. The goal of the workshop is to provide<br>
appropriate tools that enable participants to quickly assess the<br>composition and age of a site, and record it on a SHPO site form.<br><br>When: Saturday, November 8, 2008<br>Where: Department of Anthropology, Waldo Hall, OSU, Corvallis<br>
Time(s): 8am - 3pm<br>Instructors: David Brauner and Jim Rock<br><br>The Workshop includes:<br>* An overview of artifact identification and attribute analysis<br>for glass and tin containers, and ceramics<br>
* Tips for identifying artifact age based on diagnostic<br>attributes;<br>* Criteria for assessing site significance based on contents and<br>composition, coupled with background research (e.g. how to determine<br>
single vs. multiple dumping events; relating sites to local land use<br>practices)<br><br>Each participant will receive an extensive packet that includes:<br>* Historic references, identification guides, and web references;<br>
<br>* Common artifact identification *cheat sheets* (e.g. cans,<br>bottles, ceramics, nails, barbed wire, glass insulators, and beads) with<br>date ranges for artifact manufacture;<br>* Glossary of historic terminology<br>
