<DIV>Hi Susan, Eirik, Mr. Allison, and fellow Listserve recipients,</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>This wonderful listserve that Susan started has brought much
information that is useful to me, as well as some that is not (job
announcements - since I am not an archaeologist). But all
the messages are interesting, because I want to know what's happening
in the field of archaeology and fields that relate to it.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I am interested in promoting archaeology to the public, and that is one of
the things the listserv helps with. And archaeologists can get
more support and funding by making archaeology important to the
general public. People will give more if they realize the value of archaeology
to them.
<DIV> </DIV></DIV>
<DIV>The listserve gets information out about things that potentially can
help archaeology in general, and Oregon archaeology specifically. The broader
the topics the greater chance that we can get ideas that we can use to
reach more folks, hat get exposed to archaeology and discover its importance to
them. Whether it’s an "ad" on a TV program, Oregon's 150th
anniversary, or whatever vehicle, if we can relate it to archaeology, that's
another chance to reach the public. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The listserve gives us exposure to news about archaeology and
events, plus this opportunity to use some of the information to get more
exposure for archaeology, and I see it as all good stuff! Not all of us
can use all the information, but it's good to have it available.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Thank you Susan, for listing all you can at the <A

Since your present and past responses appear to voice concerns you have
regarding postings on this listserv (OR_Arch), and since there are other
members of the listserv that also post announcements, I am sending my reply to
the entire listserv in the hope of opening a productive discussion of your
valid concerns.<BR><BR>When this listserv was created the goal was to provide
archaeologists throughout the state a venue to communicate directly with one
another on a myriad of topics. Some of the goals of the listserv have
been--<BR><BR>* to provide a venue for announcements about
archaeological issues or events.<BR>* provide an open format for
questions about how an archaeological problem or issue has been handled
elsewhere.<BR>* notification of new procedures, statutes, and
rules.<BR><BR>Being the listserv's administrator I have endeavored to be open
and flexible to posting whatever topic or announcement or news may be of the
slightest interest or relevance to Oregon Archaeologists. My intent was
to divorce, or at least separate, my personal opinions regarding the
topic. Nevertheless, in my fervor to remain objective (which, as
anthropologists, we all know to be quite impossible) with postings I may have
veered too far from what participants may believe to be appropriate or
relevant announcements/topics for this listserv. <BR><BR>I now would like
to open the "floor" to all members to discuss the relationship between
archaeology and advertising/marketing/mass media/etc.; the pros and cons
(e.g., fiscal, ethics, cultural sensitivity). I entreat the listserv
members' personal experiences in trying to educate or promote archaeology to
the public with the subsequent successes and challenges; and finally invite
any of the listserv's members to voice their opinions and deliberate on a
consensus as to what topics, announcements, postings would be considered
applicable to this listserv in the immediate future.<BR><BR>I would ask Mr.
Allison, as well as all OR_Arch listserv members, please address any and all
future questions or comments regarding the listserv to all members (i.e., not
solely to me) so that all member can read and participate in a respectful and
fruitful discussion.<BR><BR>Thank you again for your reply,
