<DIV>National organization to give workshops at Extravaganza</DIV>

<DIV>Two intensive workshops to improve the use of oral history materials and<BR>the management of cultural institutions will be offered during the<BR>Northwest History and Heritage Extravaganza in April in Portland.</DIV>

<DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>Northwest Archivists are partnering with the Society of American<BR>Archivists to offer "Using Oral Histories: Publications, Exhibits,<BR>Internet and Management of Cultural Institutions" during the workshop.</DIV>

<DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>The workshop will give practical information to develop and implement<BR>oral history-based forms of outreach. Instructor Fred Calabretta<BR>explores traditional outreach tools (such as publications, exhibits, and<BR>audio and video programs) as well as newer technologies, including the<BR>Internet and podcasting.</DIV>

<DIV> </DIV>

<DIV>Calabretta is curator of collections and oral historian at the Mystic<BR>Seaport museum in Connecticut. He curated an exhibition "Stonington<BR>Fishing Fleet: Tradition and Transition" based on a three-year oral<BR>history project documenting the lives and traditions of Connecticut's<BR>last remaining commercial fishing fleet. He has a long resume of oral<BR>history leadership and teaching.</DIV>

<DIV>In a second workshop, professionals in cultural organizations can learn<BR>to balance their technical skills with those needed to manage, plan,<BR>lead, and finance their institutions and their employees. "Management of<BR>Cultural Institutions" will offer awareness and tools related to<BR>leadership, management, communication, staff and other challenges.</DIV>

<DIV>The workshop instructor will be Tom Wilsted, an archival consultant<BR>specializing in archival facilities and archival management. He was<BR>elected as an SAA Fellow in 2008. He is been involved in archival<BR>management throughout his prolific and award-winning career.</DIV>

<DIV>The Northwest History and Heritage Extravaganza, including these two<BR>workshops, will take place April 15-18 in Portland. It includes the<BR>Oregon Heritage Conference, the Pacific Northwest History Conference and<BR>the annual meetings of the Northwest Archivists and the Northwest Oral<BR>History Association. The mix of presentations that would normally be<BR>done separately at these annual events will be exceptionally exciting<BR>when they are combined at the Extravaganza.</DIV>
