The January 3, 2012 lecture sponsored by the Oregon Archaeological<br>
Society is titled “Native American Architecture of the Lower Columbia<br>
Oregon Coast and Willamette Valley: The Vernacular Style .”  The<br>
lecture will be delivered by Melissa Darby MA, principal investigator,<br>
Lower Columbia Research & Archaeology and president of the non-profit<br>
Drake Anchorage Research Collaboration (DARC).<br>
<br>
 Ethnographic, archaeological and ethnohistorical accounts suggest that<br>
the architecture of the people of Western Oregon and the lower Columbia<br>
region was similar to other Northwest Coast groups, but there were some<br>
distinct differences in dwelling styles on the central and southern<br>
Oregon Coast.  Several house styles from the region will be described<br>
and compared with descriptions of the people and their houses found in<br>
the logs and charts of Captain Francis Drake, who landed on the West<br>
Coast of America during the summer of 1579. These documents were<br>
suppressed, and the official account censored. Darby will explore<br>
whether these descriptions ‘fit’ the record.<br>
<br>
Darby is an anthropologist and archaeologist, historian and<br>
architectural historian and noted authority on the ethnohistory of the<br>
lower Columbia River region.<br>
The presentation is held at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry<br>
(OMSI), follows the general business meeting that starts at 7 PM, and is<br>
free and open to the public.<br>
