 Hello everyone,  I hope you and your colleagues find this useful -- the animation of the Eagle Books is on the internet for viewing and we will get the  full featured animimation of the Eagle Books on DVD's out for distribution by the end of August if all goes as planned. CDC -TV  is currently making the soon to be released animated version of all 4 Eagle Books  available for  viewing on the internet at  http://www.cdc.gov/CDCTV/    (To view the closed captions click on the balloon once the books open) 

The animated version of the Eagle Book series (Through the Eyes of the Eagle, Knees Lifted High, Plate Full of Color, and Tricky Treats) has been created for availability on DVD from the Native Diabetes Wellness Program (NDP), Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  

The DVD can be used in many ways as an interactive tool with parents, teachers and communities to engage children in activities and discussions about healthy eating and the joy of being active while looking to traditional ways to stay healthy and prevent type 2 diabetes.   
 
The author of the original Eagle Books, Georgia Perez, provides the narration for the animated videos.  Children and adults from the Standing Rock Sioux tribal nation bring the book characters alive with their creative voice talent.  The DVD has many special features including:
Three American Indian language translations (Chickasaw,  Paiute,  Shoshone)   
Spanish translations 
Closed Captioning (CC) and Video Descriptions  (for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing/Blind and Visually Impaired) 
Information about the author and illustrators 
Resources for children, parents, teachers and communities
To assist teachers and parents the DVD can be stopped and started for listening to elders, demonstrating fun ways to be active, describing the many colored fruits and vegetables from Mother Earth, and deciding what is a ?sometimes? or ?everyday? food selection. Teachers and parents may also find the DVD can be used as a read-along tool to accompany the print copies of the Eagle Books. 
 
Join the fun and watch the Eagle Books characters come alive on the DVD and the internet today.

Announcing the 5th Annual Oregon Flu Summit!
 
Save-the-Date!  Please help us by sharing this announcement with your community and vaccination partners!  This no-cost educational meeting is being brought to you by the Oregon Adult Immunization Coalition and its supporting agencies.  
 
Our annual Flu Summit will be held on September 16th from 9:30-3:30 at the Monarch Hotel in Clackamas, Oregon.  The curriculum will use both lecture and interactive to provide: an overview of influenza, examine State and National efforts to prevent influenza, plenary topics on chronic disease and their relationship with influenza, and interactive workshops on storage, handling, vaccine administration, and dealing with media contacts.  Webinar option will be provided for attendees who prefer to participate from their computers.  
 
 
Our intended audience includes all immunization providers, public health staff, employee health specialists, infection control specialists, hospital administrators, health educators, medical assistants, nursing home and long-term care administrators, tribal health, health professional students, immunizing pharmacists, hospital pharmacists, and other immunization stakeholders.

The CFP requests submissions for projects to evaluate interventions with the potential to reduce racial and ethnic health care disparities in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, depression and diabetes.

Finding Answers seeks proposals that evaluate policy, organizational, provider, patient, or community focused interventions. All interventions must be integrated into a system of ongoing medical care.

Proposals from community-based organizations, employers and health plans are also encouraged.

Grants awarded through the Finding Answers initiative range between $100,000 and $275,000.

Please carefully read the CFP for all eligibility criteria, selection criteria and proposal submission instructions. Please note:

* Brief proposals are due September 18, 2008.

These employment opportunities are with the Public Health Division, which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS).  There are two full-time openings with the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Section located in Portland.  One supports the Diabetes Prevention and Control Program; the other supports the Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program.  A union represents these positions.

QUALIFICATIONS
 
A Bachelor's Degree in Business or Public Administration, Behavioral or Social Sciences, or a degree related to human services; AND two years experience coordinating or administering a human services related program.
 
OR
 
Any combination of experience or education equivalent to five years of experience coordinating or administering a human services related program.

Give an example of how you motivated organizations and people to participate in a public health (or related field) initiative. 
Experience in monitoring programs, grants or contracts for compliance and quality assurance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
Position Overview ? Diabetes Prevention & Control Program
 
Responsible for providing technical expertise to Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention staff, local public health departments, tribes, community organizations, voluntary agencies and other chronic disease prevention partners to implement and evaluate interventions at the community and organization level which promote community norms change and decrease tobacco use, increase physical activity, assure access to healthy foods, and promote access to chronic disease self-management programs.  A specific emphasis and priority will be promoting ?Best Practices? for chronic disease prevention and self-management which are consistent with recommendations from CDC and includes efforts toward local and organizational policy work and community mobilization around chronic disease prevention and self-management issues. 
 
Oversee the development, funding, and implementation of multiple community, tribal, and organizational workplans.  Monitor and provide for response to requests for information from the public and assist with communication between the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Section and funded projects. 
 
This will include attendance at statewide and regional meetings across Oregon, meetings to address outreach to specific populations. The person in this position provides technical expertise and coordinates section-wide activities related to Diabetes.  Participate in teleconferences and attend national meetings as appropriate to stay current with national guidelines and best practices related to Diabetes.
 
Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS
 
Routine travel (both in-state and out-of-state) to attend meetings, conferences, and make presentations.  You must have a valid driver?s license and an acceptable driving record.  If not, you must be able to provide an alternate method of transportation.  Use of personal computers, short time lines on many projects, attendance at evening meetings.
