More than 41 million Americans may develop diabetes- and most don't even know it. They have a condition called pre-diabetes, which means their blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not yet diabetic. The key to diabetes prevention is taking small steps toward living a healthier life. Here are five small steps you can take today to live a healthier life and prevent or delay diabetes: 1. Find out if you are at risk: Talk to your health care provider. 2. Set realistic goals: Start by making small changes. 3. Make better food choices: Try to eat more fruits and vegetables, beans, and grains. Reduce the amount of fat in your diet. 4. Record your progress: Keeping a food diary is one of the most effective ways to lose weight and keep it off. Review this diary with your health care provider. 5. Keep at it: Please visit your doctor regularly and learn more by visiting www.LDA.org LDA Director Appointed to Advisory Board of the California Legislative Black Causus Foundation [http://origin.ih.constantcontact.com/fs047/1101982265695/img/31.jpg?a=1102207652372] Recently, our every own Yolie Acosta, LDA Director, was appointed to the Advisory Board of the California Legislative Black Caucus Foundation (CLBCF) . The Global Diabetes Walk is an ideal way of showing support and raising awareness of diabetes at global level. Last year 207,694 people from 70 different countries joined the walk. Less than two weeks to go, more than 230,000 people from 62 countries all over the world have registered to walk on World Diabetes Day. The World Diabetes Foundation is proud to support the International Diabetes Federation's two year focus on children through the Global Diabetes Walk which aims to create awareness amongst our project partners, caregivers, local diabetes associations, health care professionals, global media and the public. In this edition of the newsletter we share with you stories with special emphasis on prevention, capacity building, local awareness, access to care for disadvantaged children and protocols for improving the level of care. According to statistics, more than 38,000 children in Sub-Saharan Africa live with type 1 diabetes. However, the problem is that only few of them receive medical attention before it is too late, and even fewer are properly diagnosed and provided with lifesaving insulin. In Kenya, it is an enormous challenge for a family if a child has diabetes, and some families are faced with the horrible choice between supporting a child with diabetes or providing for the rest of the family. A recent fundraising project initiated by the World Diabetes Foundation supports children in Kenya with diabetes and provides them with a hope for a normal life. Access to information and care continues to be a challenge in the fight against diabetes. Therefore, when focusing on the poor, it is essential to find new ways to reach local communities. Jointly, World Diabetes Foundation and India's largest media house, Pehel Jagran support a major media campaign which travels through 14 states and makes people gather to watch the everyday drama of an Indian family with diabetes. Almost 300,000 people have been reached and more than 70,000 have turned up for screening - as a result of local awareness work. In China, emphasis on community health centres will be strengthened in more than 1,000 communities with the continuation of the National Diabetes Programme. During the initial five years, the Chinese Ministry of Health has managed to finalise national guidelines for diabetes as well as train almost 12,000 health care professionals. Focusing on prevention is focusing on nutrition and lifestyle guidance. In five Caribbean countries a food and nutrition protocol is beginning to make its impact. From 2004 to 2007, the World Diabetes Foundation supported the standardisation of a Caribbean Protocol for nutritional management of diabetes, obesity and hypertension and train health care providers. Today, health care workers have a tool at hand when seeing patients, and measuring BMI is becoming the rule rather than the exception. Again, we would like to draw your attention to the Global Diabetes Walk 2008 on World Diabetes Day 14th November which is being officially observed by the UN for the second consecutive time. We encourage you to sign up for a Walk. It is an opportunity to get some exercise while creating awareness for a good cause. Mr.Chwast's work often appears in well-known publications, including Time, Fortune, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. His illustrations in the journal Insulin? are supporting the work of Learning About Diabetes, Inc., an online charity (www.learningaboutdiabetes.org) offering free diabetes self-care programs to the millions of people with diabetes who also have literacy or language problems. Founded in 2006, the charity is the creative brainchild of the former medical communications executive and health literacy consultant Paul Tracey, of Bedminster, NJ, and Mr. Chwast. A major goal of the charity is to study how art and design can improve health care communications to the less advantaged. According to Tracey, "Diabetes disproportionately affects the poor and the less educated, yet a large number of the consumer and patient diabetes education programs created today are not easily understood by these groups. With the help of talented artists and writers, we are exploring new ways to improve diabetes self-care messages and thus health outcomes. Health care costs for all of us can be reduced if we find more effective ways to communicate diabetes prevention and treatment skills to those who need them the most."
