Northwest Health Foundation - Youth Photo Contest Launches April 1
Entries may be submitted through this link<http://nwhf.org/photocontest/> which will be updated and open to accept photos on April 1,2013. Entries will close on Friday, April 26. As in previous years, first, second and third place winners will win $300, $200 and $100 respectively. 13th Annual Multnomah County Public Health Heroes Celebration

Multnomah County Health Department recognizes that there are many people and organizations working in our community to help others make their lives better. On Monday April 1, the Board of County Commissioners will recognize this year's Public Health Heroes - those people and organizations in our community who support and promote public health. This event is free and open to the public. Reception to follow; light refreshments will be served. This is a community event and we encourage community members to nominate their Public Health Heroes.
Using DMV Records for Obesity Tracking

Public health agencies need reliable local data to guide prevention efforts. Obesity prevention is one of public health's top priorities today. DMV records can be used to track the population's weight status at a sub-county level, providing great detail on trends and disparities. This presentation covers the Oregon Environmental Public Health Tracking (Oregon Tracking) Program's work to validate data from DMV records, and demonstrates several applications to inform research and public health interventions. Bring Out Your Dead! An Illustrated History of Plagues
When: Monday, April 1, 6:30 p.m - 8:00 p.m.
Where: McMenamins Old St. Francis School in Father Luke's Room, 700 NW Bond St. in Bend
The event will especially feature a unique talk about the history and current-day Black Plague. The plague presentation will begin after a welcome from the Des Chutes Historical Museum, and a brief health progress talk by the County's Health Services Department. "Bring Out Your Dead! An Illustrated History of Plague", a free presentation by COCC Professor Mark Eberle, will be the highlight of National Public Health Week in Deschutes County.
Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide
Presented by NY Times Columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Nicholas D. Kristof

Nicholas D. Kristof will discuss his work documenting global maltreatment of women and efforts to combat such oppression, as detailed in the book he and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, coauthored, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. He argues that women's empowerment through autonomy and health is important not only from a human rights perspective, but also as key to economic progress.
Promoting Radon Testing and Mitigation in Oregon

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas formed by the natural breakdown of uranium in rock, soil and water. Colorless, odorless and tasteless, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. In this presentation we identify geologic formations in the Portland area associated with higher radon hazards, and assess the impact of recent educational efforts to promote radon testing and mitigation.
