A Report from the Streets: Communities using EPA Science Tools

Description: Many communities are faced with exposure to environmental stressors, associated health risks and environmental justice concerns. Some community concerns relate to a lack of understanding of EPA processes and language. Under the Regional Sustainable Environmental Sciences (RESES) program, EPA Region 10 collaborated with community partners across the Pacific Northwest to address this reality. By using the EPA's Community Focused Exposure and Risk Screening Tool (C-FERST) as a resource in community based participatory research projects, EPA Region 10 communities from Oregon to Washington have begun to identify, understand and respond to environmental risks and exposure. These issues range from 'Brownfields and community livability' and 'children's health and asthma along the I-5 corridor" to "just and healthy food systems" in the port city of Tacoma, WA. This webinar will feature live reports from these communities as they detail projects completed in partnership with EPA and the lessons learned for using local knowledge and citizen science to advance environmental justice efforts at the local level. This research is supported by the EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) Sustainable and Healthy Communities (SHC) program.
