Orthoimagery Status Report Dec 2010
Good morning folks - Thought it was time to send out a status report on Orthoimagery before the end of the year. I want to briefly let everyone know of the passing of Michael Golden last Oct 2010 while on a sea kayaking trip down in Mexico. I would like to thank the US Forest Service and Michael for their contributions to the Orthoimagery FIT group over the years.
A number of folks have asked about acquiring the 2009 imagery in the ½ meter format. As many of you are aware that the 1 meter data arrived in late 2009 and the ½ meter imagery arrived to the Dept. of Administration's (DAS) GEO office in summer 2010. DAS GEO discovered some issues with the datasets and worked with the vendor to resolve the issues and eventually got replacement datasets and so they are now releasing limited copies of the 2009 ½ meter datasets. To obtain copies please contact David Mather (david.mather at state.or.us) over at DAS GEO. The BLM Portland office too has a copy of the data and if needed please contact Cory Plank (corey_plank at blm.gov <mailto:corey_plank at blm.gov> ) for any data requests. Eventually in 2011 the datasets will be made available as a Web Service. However before this can all happen DAS GEO informed me there are a few steps that need to take place: 1.) Servers configured with ERDAS Apollo software ( expect this to be done within 3 weeks), 2. ) Conversion of TIFs to ECW format (1 week processing time), and 3. ) Serve the data up (maybe w/in a month?). For the coming year here is what is happing: In Summer 2011, the USDA FSA will again be acquiring updated aerials via the NAIP program, however this go around they are running a pilot program of capturing true ½ meter IR based (4 band imagery) digital data which requires an increase in flights as imagery will be captured via a lower elevation. However, even though the flights are being captured via 4 band imagery, final processing and output will still be of the 3 band RGB 1 meter spec'd format.
The logic behind this decision is that this will eliminates the extra steps required to produce any buy up products such as CIR or ½ meter products that may be requested to the project. So any contracting/buy up to NAIP needs to go through FSA directly. Below are some figures that FSA provided to me for buy up products:
1.) To acquire statewide ½ meter imagery the buy up cost is: $1, 030,000.00.
2.) For the infrared products the cost would be approximately $172,000.00.
Finally we still need to tend to the unfinished business of creating an Orthoimagery Stewardship Plan. I know this is something that Milt Hill and I have discussed that really needs to take place. I have been a bit delayed with getting this task together as I have spent the last few months programming in the FLEX environment creating a Web based GIS application for the State Lands Inventory project. Since this work is nearing completion I will be able to spend more time on the Orthoimagery Stewardship Plan.
