</v:shape><![endif]--><![if !vml]><img width=470 height=342 src="cid:image002.jpg@01CC8333.726E6530" align=right hspace=12 v:shapes="Picture_x0020_5"><![endif]><b> </b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'>The Oregon State Marine Board recognized the efforts of Deputy Bret Lort and Jason Tyrus for saving a life at their annual post-season Law Enforcement Conference, held on Monday, September 26 in Eugene. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal style='line-height:200%'><span style='font-size:12.0pt;line-height:200%;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"'> It was January 14, 2011 when the Marine Patrol was dispatched to the I-5 Bridge on the Columbia River to help persuade a suicidal subject standing on the outside railing of the bridge. Deputy Lort and Deputy Tyrus responded within minutes by boat. Portland Police were observed talking to the subject, so Lort and Tyrus maintained visual contact of the man and prepared an operation plan in case the man decided to jump. Approximately 20 minutes later, the man jumped, and landed in the water, feet first. Deputy Lort, as soon as he saw the man jump, headed toward the man as he was still airborne. The man submerged briefly and a few moments later, he surfaced, motionless on his back with blood coming from his mouth. Deputy Lort positioned the boat as close as possible to the man and maintained the boat’s position in the swift Columbia River current. Deputy Tyrus was able to grab the man by his sweatshirt during which time, the man’s eyes opened but he did not move or speak. Deputy Lort and Tyrus were able to keep the man calm and successfully transfer him to the Port of PortlandFire/Rescue Boat.
