<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">Columbia County Deputy Dustin King and Oregon State Police Trooper Heather VanMeter were both recognized for their significant contributions during the Marine Board’s post season law enforcement conference
during the week of October 27, in Bend. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in;line-height:200%"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">Deputy Dustin King from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, was honored for his efforts to coordinate this year’s “Operation Make Way” on the
Columbia River. Deputy King’s efforts resulted in hundreds of boater contacts and numerous citations and warnings, educating boaters about not anchoring in the navigation channel when large commercial vessels are transiting through. His actions likely saved
lives and will reduce the risk of a maritime disaster in the Columbia River.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in;line-height:200%"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">Trooper Heather VanMeter from the Oregon State Police, stationed in Newport (Lincoln County), was honored for her efforts in helping refine elements
of the Marine Board’s Outfitter & Guide program. Her tenacious attention to detail helped staff resolve rule inconsistencies for fishing guides and charter boats operating in Oregon. Many of the new clarifying rule changes that went into effect in January
2014 are due to her outstanding work. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent:.5in;line-height:200%"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"">The Oregon State Marine Board’s Law Enforcement Advisory Group, comprised of marine law enforcement, agency staff and Board members recommended
the, “Most Significant Contribution Award,” to a law enforcement individual for their contributions to a major project or issue of importance to Marine Board staff. The group itself was gridlocked on two individuals, so they called a tie.
<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:200%"><span style="font-family:"Times New Roman","serif""> The Oregon State Marine Board contracts with 32 counties and the Oregon State Police for on-the-water marine patrol services and provides equipment,
training, and patrol boats to contracted agencies to enforce the boating laws and help provide safety for Oregon’s boaters.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
