An update from the Social Security Administration:


Effective February 15, 2013, Social Security discontinued verifications of employee names and Social Security Numbers (SSNs) over the telephone.

Employers may verify SSNs using Social Security's Business Services Online (BSO) website at: www.socialsecurity.gov/bso/bsowelcome.htm<http://www.socialsecurity.gov/bso/bsowelcome.htm>, or by calling the Division of Business Service at 1-800-772-6270 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Eastern Time.
The Division of Business Services can assist employers to establish a BSO account.
