Or is it? At the end of the day, Republican and Democratic leaders were able to get past their barbs and come up with a deal that could keep the federal government renewing passports, refunding taxes and paying the troops. Still, both Republicans and Democrats are girding for the next wars: the vote to raise the debt ceiling that'll come this spring and could lead to the first federal default in American history if the tea party prevents it from being raised. Within moments of President Obama hailing the deal that was struck, the Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, R-KY, said he hoped that the debt limit vote would be an occasion for more spending cuts. And then there is next year's budget where the House Republicans are already pushing the plan developed by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-WI, who would cut some $6 trillion from the federal government over the next decade and voucherize Medicare. <P class=style291><SPAN class=style3311><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 13.5pt">On Average, Governors' Salaries Show Decline in Pay</SPAN></SPAN><BR>Just like American workers, whose pay has slipped in recent years, the average salary of U.S. governors also has begun to slide. According to the Council of State Governments' most recent compensation survey, the average governor's salary was $130,595 in 2010 ― down 4 percent from the year before. Much of that decline is attributable to California, which reduced its governor's salary from $212,179 in 2009 to $173,987 in 2010. Pay for top state executives in California is set by the Citizens Compensation Commission. According to Chairman Chuck Murray, the state's ongoing budget problems forced the commission to reduce salaries across the board substantially. He expects another reduction of perhaps 10 percent or more this year. "We're broke," Murray says. <P class=style291><SPAN class=style3311><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 13.5pt">Oil Price Brings Alaska $3.4 Billion Surplus</SPAN></SPAN><BR>Alaska is rolling in money from the high oil prices, with the revenue department on Wednesday projecting a state surplus of $3.4 billion. The news comes as the Legislature prepares to decide how much it wants to spend on construction and maintenance projects in the coming year. Lawmakers had already planned a big budget, but this could inspire even more projects. Legislators also are talking about putting more than $1 billion into savings in the coming year. The question will be how they divide the new projected $3.4 billion surplus between spending and savings. Other states are reeling from the recession and cutting programs. The U.S. Appeals Court in New Orleans yesterday affirmed all of Skilling's convictions. The three-judge panel said the trial judge made a harmless error in allowing the jury to convict Skilling for conspiracy on a so-called honest-services fraud theory as well as on a securities-fraud theory.
