Hi Folks,
As an ex officio member of the Oregon Library Association's Intellectual Freedom Committee<https://www.olaweb.org/intellectual-freedom-committee-home> (IFC), I agreed to forward the attached statement.
Despite efforts by the district librarian and others, including the IFC, the board of the Grants Pass School District recently voted to add to their instructional materials policy<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1X3o49jvu96W-BAPqxVrm5v5XWdO9_D3w/view> and related administrative regulations<https://drive.google.com/file/d/196GbegDwRMh3G6tw7cjYyJAMCFFxvMQ1/view> a 25-day waiting period specific to school library materials selection. That gives parents/guardians of students and staff a chance to object to new school library materials before they are put in circulation, and the process differs from the reconsideration process that is already in place to object to existing school library materials. The IFC and others have many concerns about that, as outlined in the statement that was sent to school board members, district leadership, the media, and to several Oregon library listservs.
If you are going through an intellectual freedom challenge at your library, please reach out<https://www.olaweb.org/intellectual-freedom-contact-us> to IFC members<https://www.olaweb.org/about-ifc> for support. Also, please report the incident<https://slo.oregon.gov/oifc/report> to the Oregon Intellectual Freedom Clearinghouse.
Thanks,
Jen
