Subject: [yscon] ALA Core Subject Analysis Committee Survey
Hi all,
One of our Colorado librarians sits on this committee and asked me to help spread the word about this survey. So far, academic institutions are taking up the bulk of the responses, so they are hoping for voices in schools and public libraries to even things out. She also let me know that you don’t have to be a cataloger to respond, they would love to hear feedback from anyone who works at libraries.
Would you share with your states if it isn’t already on your channels?
Thanks,
Kate

Subject: Question!
Hey Kate,
Hope you’re doing well!
We’re looking for more responses from school and public libraries to our survey on retaining the $v in subject headings (ex. 650 0 Friendship$vJuvenile fiction.) which are vital to school and public libraries. Library of Congress wants to do away with that subfield, which will make searching for patrons and staff much more difficult. Do you know who I can contact to get this sent out to the state, and how to get more feedback from public and school libraries? We could really use more feedback from those areas.
Here’s the body of the email:
The ALA Core Subject Analysis Committee Working Group on $v Retention invites you to participate in a survey investigating potential impacts on library collections, catalogs, staff, and patrons of the Library of Congress' omission of form subdivisions ($v) in subject headings as part of their "Modern MARC<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.loc.gov/cds/downloads/ModernMARC.pdf__;!!IxwSgPkRNrzx!t_B3OKYVap8b4vBArPFY41uvPex3R0V1D_c5rYiYist-wOx-xqdNzbdb8s8lbw9yTjun_vPam4GufYttkbs0kTjCbYHB0G0$>" cataloging practice. (For a detailed explanation of the change, a periodically-updated informational statement from the Working Group can be found here<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/docs.google.com/document/d/1IVzQP5483TEorq1ncrL6af68b0Dw4tA7GhaQOQSAjUs/edit?usp=sharing__;!!IxwSgPkRNrzx!t_B3OKYVap8b4vBArPFY41uvPex3R0V1D_c5rYiYist-wOx-xqdNzbdb8s8lbw9yTjun_vPam4GufYttkbs0kTjCtcehsjE$>.)
This survey is intended for library workers, archivists, and others utilizing Library of Congress subject headings in their institutions. Please feel free to share widely with anyone you think might be affected by the omission of $v and interested in providing feedback.
The survey will take approximately 10-20 minutes to complete; it contains three sections related to genres and form subdivisions ($v) in your catalog and library processes. You will also be asked to identify the kind of library you work for and your role(s), the ILS (integrated library system) and discovery layer/public-facing catalog your institution uses, and which library information networks you utilize. The survey is anonymous and does not collect personal information of any kind.
Survey results will be used to inform the Working Group's advocacy work.

The survey will close on Friday, September 19, 2025.
